Optimizing the Fender Design for LMT2 at Port of Lumut, Malaysia
Lumut Maritime Terminal 2 (LMT2), located in Batu Undan, Malaysia, forms part of Lumut Port’s continued development and expansion. The project includes a new 396 m long berth designed to increase cargo-handling capacity and support efficient terminal operations through modern marine infrastructure.
In collaboration with Lumut Maritime Terminal and contractor MEB Construction Sdn Bhd, ShibataFenderTeam (SFT) designed and supplied 36 Cone Fender Systems (SPC 1200, G1.0), each equipped with a 2000x4320 mm closed-box steel panel. The scope of supply also included 37 T-head Bollards with a rated mooring capacity of 80 tonnes.
Optimizing the Original Tender Design
A key aspect of the project was the opportunity to review and optimize the original tender design. The initial specification was based on a FE Leg Fender System with a fender spacing of 6.5 m.
As part of SFT’s Consulting approach, our Sales and Engineering teams worked closely with the contractor and consultant to assess the proposed arrangement in greater detail. The review considered the design vessels, berthing conditions, fender spacing, structural reaction loads, and the potential simultaneous engagement of multiple fender units during berthing. Based on this assessment, an alternative arrangement using SPC Cone Fender Systems was developed, together with an optimized fender spacing of 12.5 m.
The revised design provided an improved balance between energy absorption and reaction force, enabling lower loads to be transferred into the supporting berth structure while maintaining the required berthing performance. The optimized arrangement also provided a robust fender solution suited to the operational requirements of the terminal.
Particular attention was given to the long-term protection of the fender system components in the marine environment. The chain assemblies were therefore supplied with a duplex coating system to provide enhanced corrosion protection.
The LMT2 project at the Port of Lumut demonstrates the value of considering the complete interaction between vessel, fender system and supporting structure rather than simply following the original tender specification.
Through close cooperation with the project partners and a detailed review of the technical requirements, SFT was able to further develop the original concept into an efficient, robust and project-specific fender solution for the new berth (#0764).
