ShibataFenderTeam protects Elizabeth City Bridge in North Carolina

Elizabeth City Bridge runs over the Pasquotank River in Elizabeth City and is an important connection for the area.

50 t of ShibataFenderTeam UHMW-PE Sliding Plates protect the piers of the bridge since fall 2013. The project was successfully realized with our local representative Lee Composites. That portion of the river, connecting Elizabeth City with the neighboring county, is mainly used by smaller leisure boats sailing up the river. The fender system includes the typical pile cluster and waler bridge fendering design. The fenders were delivered on time to fit with the installation schedule of the project and were installed by our long term client Archer Western for the final client, the DOT of North Carolina.

The UHMW-PE thickness of 152 mm (6") was unusual but reasonable for the application and intended service life of the fendering system. This PE thickness and the required minimum length is a general challenge for PE manufacturers. Usually these thicknesses are only available in shorter length due to the available press formats. With our German production site, however, we were able to meet the requirements of the client on time and in budget.

Elizabeth Bridge is kind of a lifeline to connect the area due to limited bridges crossing the river. Protecting this high value asset was an important project for our US office.

We are glad that the UHMW-PE Sliding Plates are successfully in operation for the fifth consecutive year.
